September 7, 1981: Despite 16 hits the Reds fall to the Padres 7-5 in ten innings. With the game tied at five, Joe Lefebrve doubled to drive in the go-ahead runs in the top of the tenth. Gary Lucas (3-3) picked up the win in relief with Eric Show earning his first save of the season. Reds reliever Tom Hume (3-3) was the loser. Dave Concepcion drove in three of the Reds runs and light hitting catcher Mike O'Berry went 3 for 4.
September 8, 1981: Reds right fielder and leadoff hitter Dave Collins collected two hits and walked twice scoring two runs and driving in another as Cincinnati took game two of the series, 10-3. Collins also stole his 18th and 19th bases of the season. Bruce Berenyi (7-5) was able to work out of trouble despite allowing four hits and five walks in six innings to pick up the win. Juan Eichelberger (8-9) suffered the setback.
September 9, 1981: Southpaw Charlie Liebrandt (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in his ARAIG debut as the Reds downed San Diego 6-2. Liebrandt went six innings allowing only two runs. Dave Concepcion and Johnny Bench each went 2 for 4 with each homering to lead the Cincinnati offense. Tim Lollar (5-4) suffered the setback.
