Philadelphia takes two from Pittsburgh
Philadelphia pitching struggled and their hitters couldn't get untracked until late in both games. In game 1, trailing 6-4 going into the bottom of the 8th, the Phillies put two on the board to tie the game. They won it in the bottom of the 9th when with two outs Manny Trillo singled home Lonnie Smith. Game 2 was much more dramatic as the Pirates pounded Phillie starter Bystrom as they garnered 8 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs putting Philadelphia in the hole 6-0 at the end of six. The Pirates scored again on Proly in the top of the 7th. The Phils put two on the board in the bottom of the 7th to get within 5 runs, 7-2. With the Phillies manager thinking loss, he left Proly in until the 9th, when the Pirates added another tally to their total. The surprise came in the bottom of the 9th when the sleeping Phillies scored 6 runs after two outs had been recorded. Score tied 8-8 after 9. In the bottom of the 10th Trillo again singled home the winning run, Larry Bowa.
