Houston continues to play well at home, sweeping second place Cincinnati to maintain their grip on first place.

Game One: Cincy's Frank Pastore (8-6) continues to pitch well, with an ERA below 2, but leaves after six losing 3-0, as Houston's Joe Niekro (7-6) outpitches him. But after the starters leave, the game continues tied until the 11th inning. Houston gets a one-out double off the leftfield wall from former Red Joe Morgan off Mike LaCoss (5-6), and he immediately scores on a double to left center by Art Howe to win it for reliever Joe Sambito (6-2), who pitches two perfect innings.. Houston 2, Cincinnati 1 (11 innings).

Game Three: Houston starter Nolan Ryan (7-8) pitches well, striking out seven and holding Cincinnati to one run in eight innings. Cincinnati's Charlie Liebrandt (8-6) struggles, giving up six runs and isn't helped by two errors. Jose Cruz and Cesar Cedeno both drive in two, and Cedeno pokes his third homer in the easy win. Houston 6, Cincinnati 1.
