BRAVES TAKE TWO FROM VISITING METS

The Atlanta Braves closed out their current home stand winning two of three from the New York Mets. 

GAME 1:   ATLANTA 5   NEW YORK 0       
                    WP:  NIEKRO (6-1)
                     LP:   FALCONE (3-2)

                     HOME RUNS: NONE

Phil Niekro pitched his 4th complete game, a 6 hit shutout, in defeating the New York Mets 5-0. Niekro was in complete command walking only 1 and striking out 4. His latest effort lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.39. Niekro's excellent outing was supported by a host of Braves hitters led by Jerry Royster's 2 hits and 2 RBI. Chris Chambliss also added 2 hits and an RBI.


GAME 2:   NEW YORK 2   ATLANTA 1


                     WP:   ZACHRY (1-0)    S: Allen (6)
                     LP:    MATULA (4-3)

                     HOME RUNS:   HENDERSON, S (1)

In the first game of a doubleheader, Pat Zachry  pitched 5.2 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run as the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 2-1. In a game featuring great pitching from both starters, the Mets scored all they needed in the 2nd inning on Steve Henderson's 2 run home run. The Braves scored their lone run on a double play in the bottom of the 4th. Rick Matula pitched well in defeat allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings.


  






GAME 3:   ATLANTA 5   NEW YORK 2
                  WP: ALEXANDER (2-3)
                  LP:   BURRIS (0-6)

                  HOME RUNS: NONE

In the second game of the twin bill, the Atlanta Braves bounced back and defeated the Mets 5-2. Bruce Benedict led the Braves attack with a double and 3 RBI. In earning his second win of the year, Doyle Alexander pitched 8 innings allowing one unearned run on eight Met hits.
