Bud Black and Steve Ontiveros faced off in this winner-take-all game. The A's got off to a very quick start in the first. Tony Phillips walked, Terry Steinbach tripled him in, then scored on a single by Jose Canseco. They made it 3-0 in the 2nd on Steinbach's 2-out RBI single. Meanwhile, Ontiveros was on a roll, retiring the first 8 batters over 3 scoreless innings. KC would not go quietly however, as Kevin Seitzer and George Brett hit back-to-back homeruns in the 4th. Frank White doubled, but Ontiveros escaped with the lead intact. Oakland got those runs right back on Dwayne Murphy's RBI double, and an RBI ground out. Willie Wilson singled in a run in the 5th, but once again, the A's got it right back, this time on a bases-loaded RBI fielder's choice. The Royals got the first 2 runners on in the 6th, bringing some action to the Oakland bullpen. However, Ontiveros wiggled out of the jam, then threw a scoreless 7th. Oakland added a run in the 7th on 2 walks, a sacrifice, and a ground out. Greg Cadaret retired George Brett to open the 8th, and Dennis Eckersley entered the game with 1 on and 1 out and retired the next 2 batters. Canseco singled in a run in the 8th to make it a 5-run lead. With the crowd on its feet, Eckersley threw a 1-2-3 9th to send the A's to the ALCS.
