ALCS Toronto Give No A's in Taking Down Oakland in Deciding 7th Game

 Game 1

Key vs. Stewart

Oakland drew first blood in the 2nd on Luis Polonia's RBI triple. They
broke the game open in the 5th, scoring 4 runs on 4 singles and a walk,
knocking out Jimmy Key. Reggie Jackson made it 6-0 in the 6th with an RBI
double. Dave Stewart went 6 shutout innings before Lloyd Moseby gave the
Blue Jay's a glimmer of hope with a 2-run homer. Mark McGwire killed that
hope in the bottom of the inning with a 2-run shot of his own. Ernie Whitt
doubled in a run off Dennis Lamp in the 8th. Alfredo Griffin added a little
excitement in the 8th, with the game's final run coming when he scored all
the way from 2nd on an infield single.

Fielder made it 5-0 with a solo shot in the 5th. Mike Flanagan pitched a
very effective 4 2/3 innings, but he fell 1 batter short of qualifying for
the win. Jeff Musselman, Mark Eichorn, and  David Wells combined to  stretch
the shutout to 8 innings. Mike Davis finally got the A's on the board with a
2-run homer, which immediately brought closer Tom Henke into the game.
Oakland made it interesting, getting to Henke for 2 singles, which brought
the tying run to the plate with 1 out. Henke buckled down and got Carney
Lansford on a flyball, then with the crowd roaring, he struck out Jose
Canseco to even the series.

up over the fence for the run that won the game for the Blue Jays.

GAME #4

Game #1 rematch between A’s Stewart and Blue Jays Key, with the result
being the same in the end. Neither starter “has it” and are part of the
decision, but props must be given to Stewart for working thru for his team
Double Minue Stuff without getting blown out. That allows McGwire to hit
three run blast of Toronot’s Closer Henke that game Oakland the Win and
knotted up the Series at 3 Games All.

GAME #5

Tornoto’s late season acquisition continues to do wonders for his new team,
this time spinning a beautiful 4 Hit, 1 Run masterpiece despite having Minus
Stuff. Oakland’s staff couldn’t match his effort and the Blue Jays head back
to the Bay Area sporting a 3 Games to 2 Lead in the ALCS.

Game 6

Clancy vs. Young

Curt Young struck out the leadoff hitter, but he reached 1st on a passed
ball...things went downhill from there. After a HBP, a walk, and 3 singles,
Toronto had a quick 4-0 lead. It didn't look good for Oakland when Jim
Clancy opened by striking out the side in the first. Young recovered from
his disastrous first inning to retire 10 in a row. Meanwhile, things started
to slowly turn around when Mark McGwire led off the 2nd with a homerun. Luis
Polonia singled in a run in the 3rd made it 4-2. In the 4th, a walk, HBP,
fly ball, and a FC allowed the A's to score without the benefit of a hit to
close the deficit to one. In the 6th, Toronto got 2 on, but Gene Nelson came
on  to induce a double play to kill the threat. In the bottom of the inning,
Terry Steinbach crushed a 2-run homer to give Oakland the lead. In the 7th,
an error by Kelly Gruber led to the bases being loaded with two out for
McGwire. He came through with a 2-run single, and a 3rd run scored on George
Bell's error. Dennis Eckersley had come on to kill a rally in the 7th. With
a 4-run and Eck on the mound, game over right? Not so fast! Kelly Gruber hit
a solo homer in the 8th. With 2 out in the 9th, George Bell also homered to
make it 8-6. Eckersley fumbled an easy comebacker on what should have ended
the game, then he hit the next batter. Rance Mulliniks made him pay when he
doubled to left center. A run scored to make it 8-7, but inexplicably, the
3rd-base coach held Jesse Barfield at 3rd. Eckersley then retired Gruber to
send the series to a game 7.

GAME #7

Tight back & forth battle that sees single run innings recorded twice by
each team in the first six innings.

In the Top of the 7th the A’s pitching staff lost control, literally. Three
Oakland hurlers walked four batters in a row with one out to force in the go
ahead run for Toronto. A sacrifice fly later the Blue Jays had a 4-2 lead.

In the Bottom of the 7th Reggie Jackson chased Blue Jay Starter Jimmy Key
with a two out run scoring single to bring the A’s to within one. On came
Toronto Closer Tom Henke to blow three strikes by Oakland Catcher Terry
Steinback ending the threat.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing from there for Henke though as with the score
still reading 4-3 he walked A’s leadoff hitter Tony Phillips to open the
Bottom of the 9th. Then he heaved a wild pitch sending Phillips to 2nd Base.
Lansford then singled on the infield with Phillips holding 2nd. But Henke
rallied to whiff Canseco, McGwire, and Steinbach in succession and the AL
Pennant was Toronto’s.
