In a series which featured three very close game, the Atlanta Braves were able to win two of three from the visiting San Diego Padres.
GAME 1: Atlanta 2 San Diego 0 WP- Niekro (3-1) LP- Curtis (0-1)
The Atlanta Braves scored two runs on three hits in the 3rd inning and rode the right arm of Phil Niekro in defeating the San Diego Padres 2-0. Niekro limited the Padres to four hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Dale Murphy, Chris Chambliss and Brian Asselstine each had an RBI for the victorious Braves
GAME 2: Atlanta 3 San Diego 2 WP- Matula (2-1) S: Hrabosky (1) LP- Jones (1-3)
The Atlanta Braves scored consecutive runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings and held on to defeat the San Diego Padres 3-2. Rick Matula was able to hold the Padres offense to eight hits and two runs over seven innings. Rick Camp and Al Hrabosky held the Padres hitless over the final two innings to seal the win. Chris Chambliss (1) homered for the victorious Braves.
GAME 3: San Diego 7 Atlanta 6 (10) WP- Kinney (2-0) S-Fingers (2) LP- Garber (0-1)
Willie Montanez singled home Dave Winfield in the top of the 10th inning giving the San Diego Padres a 7-6 victory in the series finale, in a game which featured 13 runs and 21 hits. Dave Winfield and Jerry Mumphrey had two hits each and 5 RBI between them. Dale Murphy hit two home runs and had three RBI for the Braves.
